This version consists of 50 single images, each of which displays a specific colour gradient. I had been thinking of my father, who had just turned 50. By putting each image into a timeline, I was trying to recollect how he experiences the passage of time as a normal man, instead of a figure with authority in my life.
Like most Asian children, I do not have an intimate relationship with my father, but I do feel the love and care he has invested in me, that silent and subtle love. I hope that this piece can help the audience rethink fatherhood and their relationship with father and family.
In the Buddhist canon, there is a saying that "All reality is a phantom, and all phantoms are real; Form is emptiness, emptiness is form." (色即是空,空即是色) By putting changing color gradients without any narrative content into motion, I illustrate the seemingly opposite but actually complementary relationship between vacancy and mortal life. In science, white light is a mix of all the visible wavelength of light, so may we, at this point, say that those layers of color are in fact the universe around us? The title, Śūnyatā, pronounced “shoonyataa”, is translated into English most often as emptiness and voidness.
