Digital image, 2018

I chose a photo of some tampons, which represent my identity as a female, and distorted it using Photoshop to make them barely recognizable and into abstract lines and color. I also put my name written in Chinese “方媛”  (Yuan Fang) covering the whole image and a Chinese sentence of “生于深圳,广东省,中华人民共和国” (born in Shenzhen, Guangdong, China) indicating where I am from. I use multiple layers and masks to blend those words into the background image to make them as part of it. When people encounter foreign languages, there is a tendency for them to see those words as “art” instead of any actual meaning. This piece, as similar to my other works, depicts my mixed feeling of being a Chinese woman in this chaotic world.
